A face down or leadframeless tantalum capacitor is a molded surface mount device that has had the conventional leadframe reduced and shifted to the underside of the capacitor.
It is designed to improve volumetric efficiency and deliver lower ESL ratings than conventional molded tantalum capacitor packaging.
These low profile devices have also been shown to improve power handing capability by decreasing the thermal resistance of the package allowing for improved heat transfer.
Most major tantalum capacitor manufacturers, including AVX, KEMET, Matsuo and Vishay, produce a series or two of leadframeless capacitors in both conventional electrolytic and organic polymer dielectrics.
